Watertown, NY in a nutshell
Watertown lies on the Black River in Jefferson County, New York. The city is a base, not the river itself. The Thousand Islands are an archipelago where Lake Ontario flows into the St. Lawrence River, on the border between New York and Ontario. River towns such as Alexandria Bay and Clayton lie to the north and northwest. Clayton is about 20 miles (roughly 32 km) northwest of Watertown.
This guide covers Watertown itself, with its Public Square, museum, mall and Thompson Park, and the places people visit from here: boat tours, Boldt Castle, Singer Castle, Alexandria Bay, Clayton, Sackets Harbor, Wellesley Island, Cape Vincent and Kingston in Ontario. It also explains what a civilian visitor can expect at Fort Drum, and covers wineries, restaurants, weather, getting there and hotels. Prices are as listed for 2026 and can change.

Our picks: Watertown and the Thousand Islands
The flight from Watertown airport is the only pick that starts in town. For most people the Clayton cruise on the US shore is the simpler way onto the river, and the glass-bottom boat adds a lighthouse stop with admission already paid.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide and Viator. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

A few things to know before you go
Seasons, tickets and border rules that shape most trips.
Boldt Castle is a seasonal visit
The 2026 season ended on 12 October, and the next opening is announced for 8 May 2027. Singer Castle visits ran until 18 October 2026. Plan castle days for late spring to early October.
Boldt Castle โCastle ticket and boat ride are separate
Heart Island can only be reached by water. The admission ticket does not include transport from the mainland. A combined castle and Yacht House ticket is also not a boat ticket.
Boat tours โThe Cape Vincent ferry is not running
Horne's Ferry between Cape Vincent and Wolfe Island does not run in 2026, so it is not a shortcut to Kingston. The Kingston to Wolfe Island ferry is a different crossing. For Kingston, plan to drive over the Thousand Islands Bridge.
Kingston, Ontario โTibbetts Point is a visit to the grounds
The lighthouse tower cannot be climbed, and the former hostel no longer offers beds. The grounds are free and open around the clock, year-round.
Cape Vincent โBridge sidewalks close for winter
The walkways on the Thousand Islands Bridge are announced to close at dusk on 30 October 2026 until spring 2027. Cars use the roadway all year. The standard car toll is $4 or CAD 5.50 in 2026.
The Thousand Islands โPassport rules for Canada
As of 6 August 2026, travelers who do not need a visa and enter Canada by car or boat from the US do not need an eTA, but do need a valid passport. This does not replace a visa for nationalities that require one.

Watertown, NY: frequently asked questions
Is Watertown on the Thousand Islands?
No. Watertown lies on the Black River. The Thousand Islands are on the St. Lawrence River to the north and northwest, with river towns such as Alexandria Bay and Clayton as the usual starting points for boats. See the Thousand Islands page.
When can I visit Boldt Castle?
Only in season. The 2026 season ended on 12 October, and the next opening is announced for 8 May 2027. Admission is $14 for ages 13 and up and $10 for ages 5 to 12, with children up to 4 free. You reach Heart Island by boat. See Boldt Castle.
Do I need a passport for a Thousand Islands boat tour?
Tours from the US shore that do not land in a foreign country need no passport or visa with some Alexandria Bay operators. That is not a general exemption, and it does not cover landing in Canada or entering the US from Canada. Read the details on the boat tours page.
Which airport serves Watertown?
Watertown International Airport, with American Airlines nonstop flights to Philadelphia twice a day. Other destinations reached via Philadelphia are connections, not direct flights. Buses and the road route are on the getting there page.
Can I visit Fort Drum as a tourist?
Fort Drum is an active military installation, not a sightseeing destination, and access is controlled. A hotel booking in Watertown does not give you entry. The Fort Drum page explains the basics for civilian visitors.
Is Watertown-NY.org an official site?
No. This is an independent travel guide, not run by the City of Watertown, Jefferson County, a tourism council, Fort Drum, a castle or any tour operator.
