Watertown NY hotels: downtown and the I-81 area
Downtown Watertown is the walkable choice. Public Square, the Paddock Arcade at 1 Public Square and the museum on Washington Street all lie within the central city. Dining options are concentrated downtown as well.
The area along I-81 near the Salmon Run Mall suits drivers. The mall is at 21182 Salmon Run Mall Loop West, with access from I-81 exits 45 and 46, and is open Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 8 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. Individual shops keep their own hours. For ways to arrive, see getting there.

Thousand Islands hotels and river towns
Staying on the river shortens the morning before a cruise. Alexandria Bay is the departure point for many boat trips. Clayton lies about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Watertown. Both towns are a good base when you plan a boat day.
Henderson Harbor on Lake Ontario offers marinas, lodging and camping, and lies between Westcott Beach and Southwick Beach State Parks. It suits boaters. Cape Vincent and the lighthouse at Tibbetts Point are a day trip, not a place to sleep: the former hostel at the lighthouse no longer offers overnight stays. Read our Cape Vincent page for what to do there.
Stays at the river towns also depend on the season. Boldt Castle closes in mid-October and reopens on May 8, 2027, and Singer Castle closed on October 18 in 2026. Many visitors time a trip for summer or early autumn.

Pitches cost $18 to $33 per night. Visitors from outside New York State pay a surcharge of $5 per night. Camping runs from May 1 to October 11, and individual areas may close earlier.
Cabins and cottages
Some cabins and cottages are available all year. Cabins 1 to 4 and 9 are listed for April 24 to November 21, 2026. A season alone does not mean a free pitch, so reserve in advance.
Reserving
Reservations open up to 9 months ahead. Day use costs $7 per vehicle at peak times.
More on the island
The park has swimming from June 29 to September 7 and trails all year. See Wellesley Island for details.
Staying in Watertown for a Fort Drum visit
Many travellers who come for Fort Drum look for a room in Watertown. A hotel booking in Watertown does not give you access to the base. Entry follows Fort Drum's own visitor rules, so read our Fort Drum for visitors page before you travel and bring the documents the base asks for.
Taxes on your room
Hotel rooms and short-term rentals are generally subject to New York sales tax. The combined rate for Jefferson County is listed at 8%, in effect since March 1, 2025. A local bed tax is shown as a separate line on your bill. Exceptions and extra fees depend on the specific booking, so check the total price before you confirm.
