Things to do in Watertown, NY at a glance
Watertown is a small city on the Black River, and most of what it offers fits into one or two days. The center is Public Square, with an arcade, historic buildings and a self-guided downtown walk. The Jefferson County Historical Society runs a museum in a mansion on Washington Street. Thompson Park, with its views and the zoo, is the biggest outdoor draw.
Most visitors also use the city as a base for the river. If you plan a boat day, see the Thousand Islands boat tours page before you fix the date, because castle visits are seasonal. This page covers Watertown itself, with prices as listed for 2026.

Public Square and a downtown walk
The simplest first stop. You can do it on foot in an hour or two.
Public Square
The heart of downtown, with benches, trees and a stone monument. The north side of the square is one of the stops on the self-guided walk.
Paddock Arcade
The arcade is at 1 Public Square and is a separate stop from the museum. The two are different places, so do not plan them as one stop.
Woolworth Building
Another stop on the walk. The walk is about the city itself, not the islands.
Jefferson County Historical Society
The museum is in Paddock Mansion at 228 Washington Street. The next section has hours and admission.

The river runs through Watertown, with rapids and green banks in the city. It is a pleasant place for a short walk. It is not the St. Lawrence. Boat tours leave from the river towns.

The fall schedule lists Friday to Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The schedule shows no opening Tuesday to Thursday. Confirm the dates of the fall schedule before you drive over. The museum shows American flags, military objects, Tyler coverlets and historic rooms.
For most visitors, the museum plus the downtown walk makes a good half day, especially in bad weather.
Thompson Park and Zoo New York
The park sits above the city, with views, paths and the zoo.
Thompson Park has viewpoints, walking paths, a playground, tennis courts, picnic areas and a pool and splash pad. The zoo is inside the park. Adult admission is $12 for ages 13 to 65 and $9 for ages 3 to 12, with children up to 2 free. The posted hours are daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last ticket at 4:30 p.m. Check the schedule before a visit in November or in winter. The Thompson Park page has the details.
