Visiting Fort Drum: what civilians should know

Fort Drum is a military installation in the North Country of New York, close to Watertown. It is not a public park or a museum, and access is controlled. This page is for civilians who want to understand the basics: who can go on the post, where visitors stay, how to arrive and what winter is like.

Most guests who come for Fort Drum stay in Watertown, and many spend a free day on the river. If that is you, the Thousand Islands boat tours page shows what runs and when. This guide does not speak for the installation and does not offer passes or permissions. For access questions, ask the person you are visiting or the installation directly.

How access works for visitors

Plan ahead rather than arriving at the gate.

Access is controlled

Fort Drum is not open to walk-in sightseeing. Visitors without a military ID need approval at the gate before they can drive onto the post.

Bring valid ID

Expect to show valid photo identification. Ask in advance which documents the gate accepts for you.

Foreign visitors: ask early

Rules for visitors who are not US citizens can be stricter. Ask the person you are visiting to confirm the current requirements well before you travel.

Confirm the current rules

Gate rules and visitor center hours change. Check the current rules with the person you are visiting or with the installation before you travel.

A hotel or short-term rental in Watertown does not give you any right to enter Fort Drum. A booking is only a place to sleep.

LeRay Mansion

A historic house in the Fort Drum area.

The LeRay Mansion is a white house with columns and lawns in the Fort Drum area. Do not plan it as an open museum or a place you can walk around at any time. Any visit depends on current arrangements, so confirm in advance whether visitors are admitted.

Where to stay when you visit Fort Drum

Stay in Watertown and drive in.

Civilian visitors usually book a room in Watertown and travel to the post from there. Two areas are common. Downtown is near Public Square and walkable for dinner. The area around I-81 and Salmon Run Mall has easy road access. This is a practical split, not a list of hotels. Hotel prices and availability change, and they are not given here.

For most visitors to the post, a room in Watertown close to I-81 saves the most time. See Watertown hotels and where to stay for the full area guide.

Hotel and short-term rental charges are generally subject to the combined sales tax, which is 8% in Jefferson County. A local occupancy tax, if any, is shown separately on the bill.

CitiBus runs Monday to Saturday, with no service on Sundays or on listed holidays. The base fare is $1.50 and the reduced fare $0.75. Bring exact cash, because cards are not accepted.

Winter and snow

Snow is possible in the area from October to April, and winters are very cold. At Watertown airport, the average daily high in January is about 30°F (-1°C) and the average low about 10°F (-12°C), based on 1991 to 2020 averages. These are averages, not a forecast.

Lake-effect snow bands from Lake Ontario can fall in narrow strips, and amounts can differ a lot between nearby places. Allow extra time for the drive, carry warm clothing and check the road before you leave. The weather page has the monthly averages.
